Powerglide won't go into any gear - Team Chevelle.
I just got the Poweglide in and the cable adjusted and I noticed while it was up on the jacks with the engine running the wheels spin forward with the shifter in neutral. With the car on the ground it is enough to move the 3200# car forward slightly. It does have a transbrake, and when it is activated the wheels do stop turning as expected. 498 Posts #2 · Apr 3, 2006 Powerglides will have forward motion when there is no load on the drivetrain due to the band in them (low gear). It has a tendency to self-energize with engine RPM when there is no other clutch applied. It probably will spin the wheels in neutral also. This is not your problem. Several things can cause no reverse. The Powerglide was simple, rugged, and reasonably efficient, but does not represent any particular advance, even at the time. Going back to wide-range torque converters is not going to happen; they are very inefficient, with way too much of heating of their fluid in order to do their job. Good idea in 1940 or 1950; no real relevance today.

The stator's overrunning clutch enables the stator to spin freely in one direction but keeps it from rotating in the other. If the stator's one-way clutch spins freely while at low speeds, there will be a loss of torque multiplication, resulting in poor low-speed performance. On the other hand, if the stator's clutch freezes up and remains.

Reinsert Brush into Belt. If Belt needs to be reattached, loop it onto the motor shaft before attaching the Brush. Stretch Belt until the Brush is secure in place. Filled it up with 5 quarts of ATF which reads full on the stick. The problem is it won't go into any gear. At first we backed it on, but one tire blew so I yanked it off, turned it around, and pulled the front tires up. Pulled the driveshaft off the rear and tied it to the muffler. Finished the trip home. Got it home, unstrapped it, cranked it up to pull it off. Put it in reverse, let off the gas, then I realize I forgot to bolt the driveshaft back on. At $5000, these seem way overpriced to Powerglides found in a junkyard. However, I have an idea for a Leaf unit swapped into a classic FR Nissan using a Powerglide 2-speed. (If I were to do a USDM car instead then a Spark/Bolt swap into a Corvair with 2-speed transaxle would be the swap of choice.) Thoughts/experience with a Powerglide and AC. Sometimes a customer calls about a motor that is “freewheeling” backwards or forwards when the drive is off. This happens if a fan is connected to a common plenum and is air is being sucked past it, causing the motor to rotate. The cast iron Powerglides used a band to lock the rear band down so the planetary would spin backwards for reverse gear, and that band can only be adjusted from the inside of the trans; the aluminum units use a clutch/piston setup for reverse. Keep your 57 trans unless you decide to update to a more modern trans like a TH350 or similar. It would go forward in every gear but first. They said it exploded the planetary. It was locked up tight in first like the tranny brake was on. This tranny was doing OK, just tore it completely down, freshened it, and put it back together. Took it back out last night and tore it completely back apart. Planetary is fine.
